Ashness Bridge

Ashness BridgeAshness Bridge is one of Lakeland's most idyllic scenes; a fine packhorse bridge spanning a babbling, rocky brook, with stunning views over Derwentwater to the mighty peak of Skiddaw beyond. This view is never forgotten, and Ashness Bridge is one of the most photographed places in the whole of the Lake District. The scene changes magically with the seasons, and in autumn the golden hues of the trees and the bracken on the fells add a burst of colour which cannot fail to delight all those who view it.

Continuing up the road beyond Ashness Bridge leads to Surprise View - a rocky outcrop with commanding uninterrupted views over the whole of Derwentwater, Borrowdale, Bassenthwaite Lake and the surrounding fells. Care is required on Surprise View, as the hillside drops away sharply to the ground, some distance below. The road beyond Surprise View terminates at the charming village of Watendlath, a tiny collection of dwellings set beside a beautiful tarn.
