Blencathra

Blencathra from CastleriggBlencathra is also known as Saddleback, a name coined by the people of Penrith due to the appearance of the fell from the direction of their town. Blencathra is, indeed, a distinctive fell that is popular among walkers and climbers, and, along with its neighbour Skiddaw, it dominates the northern skyline of the Lake District.

There are many routes to the stunning summit; the Blease Fell route is a gentle, if relatively dull, way to the top. All routes are rewarded with magnificent views, both from the ascent and the summit itself. Robert Southey once commented that the view of Derwentwater as seen from the summit of Blencathra is one of the 'finest mountain scenes in the country'.

The winds are tyrannous and strong"
Samuel Coleridge, 'A Thought Suggested by a View'
