Buttermere, a small and extremely picturesque lake, is ringed by peaks and crags, occupying
the south eastern end of the Buttermere valley, which also houses
Crummock Water and Loweswater (the
Buttermere valley is the only valley in the Lake District with three lakes). It is a
relatively shallow lake and contains some fish that are thought to be descended from Ice
Age ancestors. Buttermere is hidden away from the busier areas of Lakeland, hemmed in on
either side by imposing fells: High Crag and High Stile to the west and
Buttermere Fell to the east.
The tiny village of Buttermere is situated on a small alluvial plain between the lakes of Buttermere and Crummock Water. Despite its small size, Buttermere village boasts two fine pubs, the Fish Hotel and the Bridge Hotel.
