One of the best-known walks in Lakeland is around the great arc that is formed by Fairfield
and its two southern ridges, enclosing the deep valley of Rydal Beck. Fairfield, with
its broad and grassy summit, is the highest point on the range and the centrepiece of the
popular walk, the Fairfield Horseshoe. Traversing eight different peaks (four of
which top 2500 feet), the walk is rewarding and interesting, although care must be taken as bad
weather can cause problems, particularly on Fairfield itself, which can become a confusing
place in low cloud.
Beginning at Low Pike, the route of the Fairfield Horseshoe crosses a superb collection of crags and pikes before ending at Rydal Mount (former home of William Wordsworth) in the west.
