Great Gable

Great GableStanding proudly to the north east of Wastwater at the heads of both the Wasdale and Ennerdale valleys, Great Gable is one of the Lake District's highest, and most admired, peaks. Ever-popular with fell-walkers, a climb to the summit is not easy; though the climb is not necessarily difficult, there is quite a bit of steep, hard ascent. A successful climb, however, is rewarded with some stunning views from the summit. One of the less-difficult ways up is via the path known as Moses Trod, named after an illicit whisky maker who allegedly had his still on the mountain.

Viewed from Wastwater, Great Gable's distinctive pyramidal profile sits impressively between Yewbarrow and Scafell Pike, and was chosen by the National Park as their official logo.

"It is the most picturesque of the Wastdale mountains...
one of the finest to ascend; giving some of the finest views"
Eliza Lynn Linton
