Haystacks

HaystacksAt 'only' 1900 feet Haystacks is no giant and is in fact dwarfed by its neighbours Pillar and Great Gable. It does, however, offer some fine views of Buttermere, Crummock Water and Ennerdale, and Haystacks remains an impressive fell with an interesting summit that features rocky outcrops, small screes and little tarns.

There are some who define a mountain as being a hill exceeding 2000 feet, and by this rather crude definition Haystacks is no mountain. However, as the great Lakeland fell-walker and writer Alfred Wainwright states, "Those who say that Haystacks is not a mountain because it does not top 2000 feet should go and see it. Or better still, climb it". Despite being dwarfed by the neighbouring fells, Haystacks is by no means inferior, and it was one of Wainwright's Favourite Lakeland Mountains.
