Helvellyn

HelvellynStanding higher than all but the Scafells, Helvellyn is the third highest of the Lakeland fells and the most frequently climbed mountain in England. Situated approximately half way between Ambleside and Keswick, Helvellyn is easily accessible from the A591 and is one of the most admired peaks in the whole of Britain.

The most dramatic ascent of Helvellyn is from the east, along the knife-edged ridge of Striding Edge - not one for the faint-hearted! The summit of Helvellyn is flat and grassy, so much so that in 1926 an aeroplane successfully landed there!

There are fantastic views of the Lake District from the top of Helvellyn, and the range is the most extensive continuous area of high fell country in Lakeland.

Striding Edge
"Helvellyn's height at last we gain'd,
And, panting for relief, remained
To mark th'extension round;
Then down with lighter pace we bent;
A SPRING! the clearest Heav'n e'er sent -
I kiss'd the moisten'd ground"
Joseph Budworth, 1792
