On June 5th 2004, one of our photographers, Michael Sayles, and his father, Philip, will embark upon an epic walk around the Lake District. Beginning at Coniston, the walk will see the pair scale all 56 of the Lake District mountains that exceed 2500 feet in height, and will cover a distance of over 120 miles, before ending in Staveley around a week later.
As well as the 56 peaks exceeding 2500 feet, the walk will also take them to the top of dozens of other smaller Lakeland fells, through lush valleys, and along the shores of many lakes and tarns. This walk will be completed entirely on foot, with no support vehicle. For more information on the walk, see the table below. A full report of the walk will be online at the end of June 2004.
Michael and Philip are also using the walk as an opportunity to raise funds and awareness for AMUR, an Anglo-Russian charity that aims to preserve Siberian Leopards and Tigers in the wild. The Amur (Siberian) Tiger is the largest cat in the world, a proud beast that is sadly threatened through poaching and destruction of habitat - there are only an estimated 350 such Tigers remaining in the wild. The Amur Tiger lives along side its smaller cousin, the Amur Leopard, which is the most endangered big cat in the world, with only 30 surviving in the wild. Please help AMUR by visiting their website and making a donation - click on the logo below to visit www.amur.org.uk - remember to mention the Lakeland Landscape Sponsored Walk when making a donation!
The following table shows a list of the 56 peaks exceeding 2500 feet in the order that they will be climbed. The table also shows the individual height of each peak, plus the height rank (for example, 'Scafell Pike', the highest mountain, is ranked '1', whereas 'Wetherlam', the smallest at 2502 feet, is ranked '56').
