The current Mirehouse was constructed by the Earl of Derby in 1666, and with gardens facing Bassenthwaite Lake and with Skiddaw at the rear, it is surrounded by the most stunning scenery. The Earl of Derby sold the house in 1688 to Robert Gregg, his agent, and since then the house has passed by inheritance.
The house has now been adapted for several households, and in 1981 it was decided that the ground floor should be opened to the public. The house contains a wide range of interesting portraits, furniture and manuscripts, including letters from Wordsworth, Tennyson, Southey and John Constable. However, as it is a private home, opening times are restricted (Sunday and Wednesday, 2pm to 4.30pm). The grounds and tea rooms are open daily.
