Newby Bridge is a small settlement, no more than a tiny collection of dwellings and two hotels
clustered around the impressive bridge which gave the village its name. The handsome
five-arched bridge that spans the picturesque River Leven is an important river crossing
that was built in 1651, when the older timber construction was replaced. Situated at the foot
of the Lake District, Newby Bridge is set among beautiful Lakeland farmland within easy reach
of Lake Windermere, from which the River Leven travels on its
way to Morecambe Bay at Greenodd. Downstream of the bridge is a weir which
regulates the water level in Windermere.
A short distance from Newby Bridge is the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (pictured above), upon which the visitor can travel into Lakeland in lovingly maintained steam trains. The award-winning Aquarium of the Lakes is also nearby, with more than 30 habitats recreated to show the marine life of the region.
