Pooley Bridge is a pretty little village straddling the River Eamont at the head of
Ullswater in the north east of Lakeland. An impressive and handsome bridge, built in the 16th century, spans the river as it leaves Ullswater, showing that Pooley Bridge was an important settlement in past times. Once a small fishing and farming community, the village sits at the foot of Dunmallard Hill, on top of which is the site of an Iron Age fort. The village church of St. Paul's dates from around 1868.
Most visitors come to Pooley Bridge (just south west of Penrith) to enjoy a trip on the steamers which travel Ullswater, taking passengers on a leisurely cruise to Howtown and Glenridding at the southern end of the lake.
There are also excellent walks from Pooley Bridge, and a short distance down the A592 (which follows the western shore of Ullswater) is a National Trust car park, from where you can walk through enchanting woodland to the stunning waterfall of Aira Force.
